NAC supplements
At BeatsWell, you will find a carefully curated selection of NAC supplements, chosen for their purity, quality, and transparency. NAC is an acetylated form of the amino acid L-cysteine and is part of our range of amino acids.
This is where it starts

What is n-acetylcysteine (NAC)?
N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is the acetylated form of the amino acid L-cysteine. L-cysteine is a sulfur-containing amino acid that your body normally produces from the amino acid L-methionine.
This is why cysteine is called semi-essential: the body usually produces it itself, although the extent varies per person and situation.
The added acetyl group makes NAC more stable and better absorbed than free L-cysteine, which explains why supplements almost always choose this form.
In the body, NAC is converted back into cysteine, one of the building blocks the body uses for glutathione production. You will encounter the substance as n-acetylcysteine and as the abbreviation NAC; both refer to exactly the same substance.
Are there approved claims for NAC?
For NAC, there are no health claims approved by EFSA. This means that we do not make any statements about what the substance would do in your body. Many providers still link NAC to all sorts of effects, while these have not been officially substantiated and approved.
BeatsWell consciously chooses the opposite route: we factually tell you what the substance is and what has and has not been approved, so that you can make an informed choice yourself.
It is good to know that n-acetylcysteine in the Netherlands is registered not only for use as a supplement but also as a mucolytic drug. This role as a filter, clear about what is true and what has not yet been proven, is exactly what we stand for.
What forms of NAC are there?
NAC supplements come in a few different forms. The most common is the capsule, often a plant-based capsule suitable for vegetarians and vegans. The dosage per capsule is usually between 500 and 750 milligrams of n-acetylcysteine.
In addition, there is NAC with a sustained release, where the substance is released more gradually, and it is sometimes offered as a powder.
NAC naturally has a somewhat sulfurous smell; this is normal for this substance and says nothing about its quality.
Which form suits you depends mainly on your preference for dosage and ease of use. A capsule with a fixed amount makes it easy to maintain the same intake every day within your routine.
What should you look for when choosing n-acetylcysteine?
When choosing n-acetylcysteine, you mainly look for purity, a clean label, and a well-considered dosage.
Preferably choose pure n-acetylcysteine with as few unnecessary excipients as possible, and a label that clearly states which form and quantity you are getting. Independent lab tests for purity and heavy metals provide extra certainty.
Our offering undergoes a three-step curation: an expert panel, targeted product selection, and a final check, where products with proprietary blends, artificial colorings, or unnecessary fillers are rejected. This way, only what meets these requirements makes it into the assortment.
Finally, pay attention to the dosage: according to the RIVM, adults can take up to 1,200 milligrams of n-acetylcysteine per day without side effects, and for children, that limit is lower.
Use is not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding and for children under two years of age. Because n-acetylcysteine is also registered as a medicine, combination with that medication is also not recommended.

FAQ's
When is the best time to take NAC?
NAC is usually taken on an empty stomach because an amino acid then competes less with dietary proteins. Many people choose to take it in the morning or between meals. The instructions for use on the packaging remain leading for the timing and quantity.
What does the body use glutathione for?
Glutathione is an endogenous substance found in almost every cell, and cysteine is one of its building blocks. The body produces glutathione itself, using cysteine, which is released from sources such as NAC.
Does NAC have a particular smell or taste?
NAC naturally has a slightly sulfurous smell, which is characteristic of this sulfur-containing substance and does not indicate anything about its quality. You will barely notice this in capsules, whereas it can be more pronounced in powder. The smell does not disappear and is therefore not a sign of spoilage.
Can you combine NAC with other supplements?
NAC can be combined within a broader routine and is often chosen by people who are taking longevity supplements. If you are using medication, consult your doctor or pharmacist first. Also, keep a close eye on the total daily amounts of all products combined.
