NAD+ Supplements: What Really Works and What's Just Marketing?

NAD+ supplements are everywhere, and the promises are grand: more energy, radiant skin, years off your biological clock. It sounds too good to be true. So, is it? Time for an honest check, without the sales pitch.

Does NAD+ actually work?
Short version: partially. Your body doesn't create NAD+ out of thin air; it builds it from precursors. And that precursors like nicotinamide riboside (NR) increase your NAD+ levels has been clearly demonstrated in humans. So far, so good.
But does more NAD+ automatically mean more energy, better skin, and a younger body? That's where it gets tricky. That last step, from "more NAD+" to "you feel and see it," has not been firmly proven in humans. It's a logical expectation, not an established fact.
The promises you should distrust
Here's where you need to be careful. You even see dermatologists and influencers making strong claims about energy, skin, and aging. But such promises are not allowed as health claims under European regulations, and, more importantly, they have not been demonstrated in humans. Nice sales pitch, thin evidence.
A useful compass: the more emphatic and spectacular the promise, the more cautious you should be. Research speaks in nuances. Marketing in superlatives.
Beware: NAD+ in the ingredient list is mainly an expensive detour
Another pitfall, and here the distinction is important. It's not about a slogan like "NAD+" on the front or in the brand name; that's perfectly fine. It's about the ingredient list. If NAD+ (or its full name, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is listed as an active ingredient, that's a red flag.
Why? NAD+ is a large, unstable molecule, and orally, it's a detour: your intestines first break it down into smaller building blocks, after which your body has to rebuild NAD+ from those through various steps. So, you don't absorb it as a whole molecule. The fancy liposomal or sublingual variants promise to bypass this detour, but the independent evidence for that is meager, and the studies that exist often come from the manufacturer itself, without independent verification. You're then mainly paying for a story on the label. What you want to see in the ingredient list is a precursor: NR or trigonelline, which take the controlled, better-substantiated route.
What about NMN then?

How to recognize a good NAD supplement
Enough warnings, now for the practical part. What should you look for? Actually, four things.
So, turn the package around and read the ingredient list. Is there a precursor (NR or trigonelline)? Good sign. Is NAD+ itself listed as an active ingredient, or a vague blend without dosages, and are grand promises rolling over you? Then you know enough.
